Congressman Berry’s Statement on the Financial Rescue Package Defeat

Monday, September 29th, 2008

“I am extremely disappointed that Congress was put in a position to have to consider spending taxpayer dollars to clean up the messes of Wall Street, whose irresponsible actions have rippled throughout our financial system and threaten the economic health of Main Street.

“This bill was not about bailing out Wall Street.  It was about protecting the pensions and other investments of ordinary Americans, and to ensure that our farmers and small businesses are able to access credit to grow and keep Americans working.  I hope that we can come together in a serious manner and act responsibly to address the instability that has hit our financial system, and do so in a way that protects families and small businesses.

3nd Annual “FEED THE HUNGRY” Golf Tournament

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The Holiday Hills United Methodist Men (UMM) of Greers Ferry are once again organizing their golf tournament to benefit the hungry in the Greers Ferry area.  The UMM have been providing food baskets through the Angel Ministries to several families for the past year from proceeds garnered from this event and now it’s time for the community to come together once again to support such a worthy cause.

An attempt is being made to contact businesses and individuals to obtain sponsorship for the Golf Benefit.  Sponsors are needed at all levels:  Gold, Silver or Bronze.  A gold sponsor ($400.00) will have a 4’ X 8’ banner and hole signs; Silver sponsors ($300.00) will have a 3’ X 6’ banner and hole signs; Bronze sponsors ($200.00) will have 2’ X 6’ banners and hole sign.  In addition, a business or an individual can sponsor a hole.  Large hole sponsors ($100.00) will have an 18” X 24” hole sign and Regular hole sponsors ($50.00) will have a 12” X 18” hole sign.  Both banner and/or hole signs will read:  “We sponsored the ‘Feed The Hungry’ Golf Benefit Tournament” with the sponsor’s name and logo for major sponsors and name only for hole sponsors.  There will be 2 Hole-in-one hole awards: one for $25,000 and one for a golf car, for the first hole-in-one on the particular designated hole!

Secratary Daniels: Don’t Forget to Vote

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today reminded Arkansans who are not registered to vote to submit a voter registration application by the October 6 deadline in order to participate in the November 4 General Election and Nonpartisan Judicial Runoff.

“2008 is an historic election year, and I want all eligible Arkansans to be able to have their voices heard this November,” Secretary Daniels said.   “But, to do that, Arkansans must first get registered to vote in advance of the October 6 deadline.”

To be eligible to vote in Arkansas, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen residing in the state who will be 18 years of age on or before Election Day.  Registrants cannot claim the right to vote in another country or state and must also be free of certain restrictions relating to voter competency and felony convictions.

When registering to vote for the first time, applicants should include a copy of a valid photo I.D., utility bill, paycheck, or government document that shows one’s current name and address information.  If no I.D. is provided with the application, first time voters will be required to show I.D. at the polls or vote a provisional ballot.  Election officials will later determine whether that ballot can be counted.

Voters who have changed addresses or names since they last registered to vote may also update their information on the voter registration application.  Visit www.VoteNaturally.org to check current voter registration information and print off an application (available in both English and Spanish).

Applications may be completed in person at state revenue and county clerks’ offices, public libraries, and public assistance agencies, or they may be submitted by mail to county clerks’ offices or to the Secretary of State’s office.  If applying by mail, prospective voters should contact their county clerks to confirm the receipt and acceptance of their completed application.

Fasting before the cholesterol test is encouraged, but health professionals agree that in mature citizens eating before tests causes little deviation in test results.
