New Novel Parallels Current Global Crisis

Author Bud Connell combines complex characters and
earth-shattering events in the hopes of creating a story that will
resonate with everyday American citizens in Peak Experience:
A Novel

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (MMD Newswire) March 6, 2009 — Peak
Experience: A Novel by Bud Connell is the fictional story of
one man’s determination to overcome his innermost fears in
order to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

In Peak Experience, Connell introduces readers to Trip, an
ordinary yet complex man who has just been employed by a
charismatic firm. From the moment Trip is hired, danger,
intrigue, romance and murder accompany him on a journey
sweeping the major ports of the world, where he encounters
double-dealers, passionate physical desires and
life-threatening experiences. Entrapped by insidious evil but
driven by the urgency of survival, Trip must conquer his
crippling fears in time to stop malicious conspirators who are
plotting to annihilate our way of life.

Motivated by the recent events in Washington and on Wall
Street and what the author believes is the general apathy of
most American citizens, Connell wants readers to identify with
the characters and circumstances in his story. “The hidden
conspiracy exposed in the novel is a plot that could actually
occur,” he says. “It is my hope that the book will penetrate the
minds and hearts of readers and encourage them to consider
that they, as ordinary citizens, could be called upon to do
extraordinary things.”

For more information or to request a free review copy,
members of the press can contact the author at
budconnell@sbcglobal.net. Peak Experience: A Novel is
available for sale online at Amazon.com, BookSurge.com and
through additional wholesale and retail channels worldwide.

recipient of seven Telly Awards and was given the National
Vision Award for commercial production in 1996. He was also

6th Annual Take the Lake 5k Walk/Run

6th Annual Take the Lake 5k Walk/Run
to Benefit American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

One person can make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the story of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, which began in Tacoma, Washington, as the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.
In the mid-1980s, Dr. Gordy Klatt, a colorectal surgeon from Tacoma, decided to personally raise money for his local American Cancer Society office by doing something he enjoyed – running marathons.  In May 1985, Klatt spent a grueling 24 hours running 83 miles on the track at the University of Puget Sound’s Baker Stadium in Tacoma. He recruited friends to pay $25 each and run or walk 30 minutes with him.   $27,000 was raised to fight cancer. Nearly 300 of Dr. Klatt’s friends, family, and patients watched as he ran and walked the course that first year.
As Klatt circled the track, he thought about how others could participate. He dreamed of a 24-hour team relay event to raise money to fight cancer. He formed a small committee to plan the first team relay event – the City of Destiny Classic 24-Hour Run Against Cancer.  In 1986, 19 teams participated in the first team relay event on the track and raised $33,000. Today, Relay for Life events occur throughout the world, raising millions of dollars for the American Cancer Society and its many research programs and local outreaches.
On Saturday, April 25th, the 6th Annual Take the Lake 5k Walk/Run will be held at DamSite park near Heber Springs, Arkansas. This race is held in conjunction with Spring-Fest, a local event sponsored by the Heber Springs Chamber of Commerce, and it benefits the local American Cancer Society Relay for Life.   ”All of the money raised from this event will stay in Arkansas and will help to provide funding for research for all types of cancers and benefit other programs such as ‘Look Good, Feel Good.’” says race spokesperson Cynthia Kasbohm.  “The actual Relay For Life for Cleburne County will take place on September 18th, starting at 6:00 p.m.”
The race begins at 5:00 p.m., at the John F. Kennedy overlook, located north of Heber Springs, and proceeds across Greers Ferry Dam, then winds through Dam Site Park.  “This is a beautiful course with awesome views of the lake in a family-friendly atmosphere,” Kasbohm notes, adding… “All age groups are invited to participate.”
The race is open to men and women in both running and walking categories.  Prizes will be awarded, with the overall male and female winners each netting $100.  Registration is open now, and the fee for early entry is $20 per person through April 17th.  To be guaranteed a T-shirt, participants should register by April 17th.  After this date, the entry fee will be $25 per person.  Race participants can register online at www.arkansasrunner.com/misc/entries/lakeentry.htm
Race day registration and runner’s packets may be picked up between 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., at Dam Site Park in Heber Springs, where race participants are to assemble.  Buses will shuttle the participants to JFK Overlook beginning at 3:45 p.m., and the last bus will leave Dam Site Park at 4:45 p.m. For more information, visit the Take the Lake blog at http://takethelake5k.blogspot.com, or call Cynthia Kasbohm at 501-206-5498, or e-mail CKasbohm@suddenlink.net.

Arkansas Guardsmen honored for their service in Iraq
~ Freedom Salute ceremony recognizes Soldiers and the Families who support
them

CAMP JOSEPH T. ROBINSON, Ark. – Approximately 200 Arkansas National Guard
Soldiers were recognized here today with a Freedom Salute ceremony in honor
of their service in Iraq.

The Soldiers were members of three separate units which were called upon to
augment the deployment of the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in 2007.
The
units mobilized with the brigade in January 2008 and returned from Iraq the
following December.

The first unit recognized was the 87th Troop Command’s 1123rd Transportation
Company, with units in both North Little Rock and Blytheville.  Also
recognized was North Little Rock’s 1038th Horizontal Construction Company.
Both units served at Camp Taji, Iraq, where they were responsible for the
force protection at the base.

The final group of Soldiers recognized were members of the Camp Robinson
based 77th Aviation Brigade.  The 77th’s Soldiers who served with the 39th
for the deployment were scattered across several locations and were
responsible for protecting supply routes and controlling base entry points.

Alyson Courtney, news anchor with Little Rock’s KTHV, served as the guest
speaker for the event which honored both the Soldiers and the Families who
were there to support them.

“What you do continues to inspire me,” said Courtney, as she spoke about her
experience in covering the Arkansas Guard over the past five years. “Your
courage is honorable and equally as honorable is the sacrifice of your
family.”

The Arkansas National Guard currently has approximately 300 Soldiers and
Airmen mobilized in support of overseas operations.  Since Sep. 11, 2001,
the
Arkansas Guard has supported the mobilization of over 11,500 troops in
support of the global war on terror.

47th Annual Arkansas Folk Festival

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

47th Annual Arkansas Folk Festival

April 17 – 19, 2009

It’s time once again for the Arkansas Folk Festival in Mountain View. The theme for this year’s festival is “Mountain View History as seen through the eyes of Grandma and Grandpa”.  Originating with the Folkways Festival held in 1941 at Blanchard Springs, the festival has been held continuously since 1963 on the third weekend of April, marking the beginning of the ‘season’ in Mountain View.  Thousands of visitors and residents reserve this weekend to renew a kinship with tradition and family.

A  highlight of the festival is the parade on Saturday morning beginning at 10 a.m. With floats sponsored by local organizations and businesses, dignitaries, the school’s marching band, antique cars and horses, the parade offers something for everyone as it winds its way down Main Street.

This year’s festival will again feature the Artisans Market on the Square, which made its debut last year.  The Artisans Market is a juried show offering handmade traditional and contemporary crafts, fine art and folk art. The Market will start at noon on Friday and continue Saturday and Sunday. Artisans from the Mountain View Art Guild, the Ozark Folk Fiber Guild, the Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour, the Ozark Folk Center and the Arkansas Craft Guild will be joined  by other exceptional artisans to fill the square with a variety of unique hand made items. A pedestrian-only mall will be designated around the historic courthouse square, allowing visitors to mingle among artisans’ booths while listening to music. Scheduled music programs will be presented on the outdoor stage at the courthouse on Friday and Saturday, with a gospel show on Sunday. Impromptu music groups will spring up around the area throughout the day and play into the evening hours. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and stay for the duration.

Other Festival events include a Dog-Gon Dog Show on Thursday at 5 p.m., and the Folk Festival Talent Show on Friday at 5 p.m. The Stone County Saddle Club will sponsor rodeos at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds.

The Ozark Folk Center state park kicks off its season offering free admission to the craft grounds Friday through Sunday, and free shuttle rides will be offered between the park and downtown both Friday and Saturday. Visitors may park at the Folk Center to avoid the congestion around the square

Local music shows also kick off the season this weekend, offering an exciting variety of music, comedy, and family entertainment.

Other activities available in the area include tours of Blanchard Springs Caverns, mountain biking, camping and hiking in the Ozark National Forest, and fishing on White River.
The Arkansas Folk Festival is sponsored by the Mountain View Area Chamber of Commerce. To contact the Chamber of Commerce about the festival or other local events, call  1-888-679-2859  or visit www.ArkansasFolkFestival.com.
