Snyder Votes To Rebuild Our Military Readiness And Support Our Troops

SNYDER VOTES TO REBUILD OUR MILITARY READINESS AND SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

Washington, DC – Yesterday, U.S. Representative Vic Snyder joined his colleagues in the House of Representatives and voted to give our military the tools it needs to fight our nation’s wars and to provide support to improve the lives of military families.  The National Defense Authorization Act will improve America’s military readiness, reduce fraud, waste and abuse in military contracting, and make critical investments in nuclear nonproliferation efforts.

“This bill allows us to meet our current military challenges and prepare for future challenges in a smart, strategic, and fiscally responsible way,” said Rep. Snyder.  “We are supporting our service members, strengthening our military readiness and emphasizing key programs that secure our national interests.”

This bill is designed to improve the quality of life for troops and their families.  It provides a 3.4% pay raise for service members, improves military housing, and extends health care coverage.  It creates one-year relief for veterans from “concurrent receipt,” which reduces the amount of disability pay wounded retirees receive.  Military families with autistic dependents will also receive better coverage.

“Our troops and their families sacrifice a tremendous amount for this country,” said Snyder. “We have an obligation to support the military families in Central Arkansas and all over the country before, during and after their service. This bill does just that.”

The National Defense Authorization Act sets up increased oversight and acquisition reform to support our efforts to reduce waste, fraud and abuse in military contracting.  It strengthens nuclear non-proliferation efforts, increases funding for the missile defense systems that work, and strengthens our ability to combat cyber threats to our critical infrastructure.  Also, this legislation improves our troops’ readiness by providing them with needed equipment and armor.  It replaces and repairs equipment that has been used in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and addresses equipment shortfalls in the National Guard and Reserve.

“This legislation underscores our commitment to support our troops and provide them with the tools they need,” said Snyder.

Lincoln, Pryor, Berry Announce New $500 Million Grant Program to Train Workers for Green Jobs

Lincoln, Pryor, Berry Announce New $500 Million Grant Program to Train Workers for Green Jobs

Washington – U.S. Senators Blanche L. Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Representative Marion Berry joined U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, today to announce a new $500 million green jobs initiative that will help prepare workers for jobs in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.

Secretary Solis announced the new grant program during a visit to Mid-South Community College in West Memphis.  Mid-South Community College is home to a world class Workforce Technology Center and is a grantee of the Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) program.

“I am pleased that Secretary Solis chose Mid-South Community College as a venue to announce this important new program,” said Lincoln.  “As we look to get our economy back on its feet, energy initiatives, such as this, will play a vital role in creating green jobs in Arkansas, stimulating our economy, and strengthening our national security.  With our strength in agriculture and diversity of renewable energy sources, Arkansas has a great opportunity to benefit from our country’s transition to a new energy economy.”

“Investing in green will get us out of the red. Arkansas, with its abundance of alternative energy resources, has the opportunity to be at the forefront of the green energy revolution.   This initiative will help create good-paying jobs in Arkansas, grow our state’s economy, and bring America one step closer to becoming energy independent,” Pryor said.

“Now more than ever, job training programs operated at the local level with the help of federal funding are playing a larger role in our economic recovery,” said Berry.  “Mid-South Community College has an outstanding reputation of helping to train workers for new careers and provides excellent resources for individuals seeking to learn the skills required for green jobs.  Investing in a highly-skilled workforce will strengthen our rural communities and rebuild a strong middle class in our state.”

“Emerging green jobs are creating opportunities for workers to enter careers that offer good wages and pathways to long term job growth and prosperity,” said Secretary Solis.  “Workers receiving training through projects funded by these competitions will be at the forefront as our nation transforms the way we generate electricity, manufacture products and do business across a wide range of industries.”

At today’s event, Secretary Solis discussed the creation of five solicitations for grant applications (SGAs).  Four of the competitions are designed to serve workers in need of training through various national, state and community outlets:  Energy Training Partnership Grants; Pathways Out of Poverty Grants; State Energy Sector Partnership and Training Grants; and Green Capacity Building Grants.

The fifth competition, for State Labor Market Information Improvement Grants, will fund state workforce agencies that will collect, analyze and disseminate labor market information and develop labor exchange infrastructure to direct individuals to careers in green industries.  Detailed information on grant opportunities can be found in each SGA.

Grants awarded through this competition will be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  In an effort to earn the maximum return on each investment, the Labor Department is encouraging grantees funded through these competitions to align their work with other federal agencies’ Recovery Act investments intended to create jobs and promote economic growth.  Programs funded through these SGAs will be conducted in partnership with the public workforce system in order to prepare workers to enter careers in targeted industries.

A notice of these SGAs is available at http://www.doleta.gov/grants/find_grants.cfm and http://www.grants.gov.  Dates and times for applicant virtual conferences are found in each SGA.  For more information on the array of Department of Labor employment and training investments and opportunities, visit http://www.doleta.gov.

Discount Store Burglaries Spread Across Four States

Friday, June 26th, 2009

(LITTLE ROCK) – A series of discount store burglaries across four states has led to the Arkansas State Police joining with other law enforcement jurisdictions to investigate the crimes and attempt to identify any suspects.

Agents of the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division have been requested to assist in the continuing investigations already initiated by more than a dozen local law enforcement agencies across Arkansas.  Each of the burglaries has occurred at local Dollar General Stores and Dollar Tree Stores.  Police are also investigating similar burglaries in Louisiana, Tennessee and Mississippi and are sharing information with Arkansas authorities.

The State Police CID is providing investigative support and coordinating the sharing of investigative information among all law enforcement agencies.  In each of the cases there are similarities relating to the means used by the burglars to enter the store.  In each of the cases it appears the store safe is the primary objective for the burglars.

Video recordings of the break-ins are among some of the most valuable pieces of evidence already collected in the case files.  The Arkansas State Police is releasing a compilation of the videos in hope that someone may recognize the bandits who typically carry off their heists wearing bandanas or ski masks covering their faces.  A close-up photograph of one of the burglars is electronically attached to this news release.

Anyone with information about these burglaries or information that may lead to identifying suspects associated with these cases should contact their local law enforcement agency or the Arkansas State Police at (800) 553-3820.

A list of the Dollar General store burglaries as of June 23rd is listed below.

Dewayne and Kim Ezell of Drasco have been named the Cleburne County Farm Family of the Year

Friday, June 26th, 2009
DRASCO- Dewayne and Kim Ezell of Drasco have been named the Cleburne County Farm Family of the Year for 2009. A panel of Farm Bureau members selected the Ezells from about a dozen families in the county.
Dewayne loves to tend to the cattle and Kim loves to tend to her beautiful flowers, trees, and azalea bushes. Some might say Dewayne is the kid of the family, but Kim admits their 11-year-old German Shepherd, Lisa, is the true child of the family. Another fun-loving member of the family is Sadie the Charolais cow.
Dewayne and Kim own 800 acres of land used for cattle, hay, and recreation. This is a far cry from the 15 acres owned when the farm first began. Dewayne said he has been involved in farming his entire life.
In their Farm Family interview, Dewayne said, “I purchased my first 15 acres at the age of 16. I worked on the family farm to help out and in addition I worked on the Melvins’s farm, caught chickens at night, and worked at Chaparral Trailers to earn the money used to purchase my first property. I also restored old vehicles as a teenager to earn money to help purchase my first property.”
In the summer he worked at Rock Products. At 17 he purchased a mobile home to put on the 15 acres. “I grew up on a farm with chickens and cattle and at a very young age helped Melvin, who was in a wheelchair, feed his calves and chickens. When I was 20 I bought The Country Store in Drasco. In 1987 I married Kim and we have been working side by side in the store and on the farm ever since.”
They, along with Dewayne’s dad Marvin, work the farm, which includes over 170 cattle and 145 acres of hay. “We raise the calves and the ones that we sell are sold at the Cleburne County Livestock Auction,” they said. “We keep all of the hay that we make to use on the farm.”
Dewayne tries to carry over hay from one year to the next in case any problems arise to prevent a good hay yield the following season.
In addition to the cattle and hay, the Ezells own and operate the County Store in Drasco. Dewayne and Kim work 60 to 70 hours each week in the store. “There is a lack of time to do all we need to do at the farm because the store takes several hours each week away from what could be getting done, but it is what provides the funding so we can continue buying items needed for the farm.”
The Ezells plan on working the farm fulltime in the future. “We hope to build more fences, add to our pasture, get more cattle, and do more to improve the farm each year. We also want to continue to work with NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) to make improvements and have a more efficient farm.”
Over the years the Ezells have set goals for themselves and their operation. “We wanted to improve management of the fields and as a result of hard work, we have better pastures. With the better pastures we have better control over the cattle with cross fencing and rotational grazing. Another thing we had to improve upon were the costs associated with the farm and by doing better, we have better hayfields. We also want to improve seasonal calving.”
Farm Bureau asked the Ezells what practices they have employed that contribute to protecting the environment. “We have fenced off our ponds and established grasses. We plan to fence off our creek next year with guidance from NRCS.
“We have food plots for deer and also help manage wildlife on our property. We have planted lots of clover. We worked with NRCS to build new fences, ponds, set up a rotational grazing system, and put water tanks on the farm.
“We have put fire breaks around the farm. Pasture planting using improved varieties – orchard, MaxQ, Wanger Bermuda. Put in cross fencing, use tanks, and fence off ponds. Practice timber management, made fire lanes, and burns off for wildlife. Soil samples are taken to see what nutrients are needed for the property to improve the grasses.”
Coyotes and cattle may not sound like a very good combination, but the Ezells have a working solution. “On about 185 acres of our property we have coyotes. We have a cabin on the property that has been named the ‘Fox Pen’. People pay a fee to let their dogs run the area and the income helps to improve the farm.
“This doesn’t interfere with raising the cattle. The coyotes are fed a special feed, which keeps them from bothering the cattle.”
Kim’s dad Earl spends time at the Fox Pen, making sure things are in order and letting his Walkers run about.
The farm couldn’t run without proper bookkeeping. Kim does the bookkeeping for the farm. “She does the cooking and takes care of the house and works at the store,” said Dewayne. “She helps worm the cattle and put in the ear tags. She does a great job helping with weed control on the farm as a spotter by riding with me and pointing out the weeds.”
Both Dewayne and Kim enjoy deer and turkey hunting to put meat in the freezer. “Kim puts up vegetables from the garden in the summer. She also has flower gardens at home.”
Their child is the 11-year-old German Shepherd Sadie. “She is part of the family,” Kim said.
The Ezells are members of the Drasco General Baptist Church where Kim is a sixth grade Sunday school teacher. “We have been members of the Cleburne County Cattlemen’s Association for 10 years. We are also members of Farm Bureau and have been members of the Cleburne County Community Foundation for a year. We have also been members of the Arkansas Community Foundation for a year.”
This is the 62nd year for Farm Bureau to hold the farm family of the year program. The annual announcement takes place around this time each year.
As being the Cleburne County Farm Family of the Year, the Ezells are now in the running for the State Farm Family of the Year and could possibly move on to Southeastern Farmer of the Year ceremony in Moultrie, GA.

Visit to focus on job creation and economic development

This week Congressman Berry will welcome U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to Arkansas’s First Congressional District. On Wednesday, June 24th Secretary Solis will tour the Workforce Technology Center at the Mid-South Community College (MSCC) campus in West Memphis, Arkansas.  After the tour, Secretary Solis will meet with local community leaders to discuss how investing in Green Jobs will revitalize the workforce and generate local economic development.

“I am grateful my good friend and former colleague, Secretary Hilda Solis, accepted my invitation to visit our state,” said Berry.  “Secretary Solis has a long track record of standing up for America’s working families in Congress. I am pleased the Administration recognized her work and selected her for this new position where she will continue to help families rebound from this challenging economy through programs like job creation initiatives and additional workforce training.”

Secretary Solis will be traveling throughout the South to learn more and discuss with local leaders about how investing in green jobs will jump-start local economies. She will also announce a $500 Million Competition to train workers for Green Jobs.

“Green jobs offer good wages and clear pathways to prosperity.  They are a critical part of America’s economic future,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis.  “I congratulate Congressman Berry for his commitment to ensuring workers throughout Arkansas will be at the forefront in transforming the way our nation generates electricity, manufactures products, and does business across a wide range of industries.”

“Now more than ever, job training programs operated at the local level with the help of federal funding are playing a larger role in our economic recovery. These new, highly-skilled jobs will strengthen our rural communities and help rebuild a strong middle class. I look forward to working with Secretary Solis in the years to come to help create more jobs and grow our local economy throughout Arkansas,” he said.
