Lincoln: Enemy Combatants Should Not Be Tried In Civilian Courts

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Washington – In response to today’s reports that the White House has asked the Justice Department to consider alternate locations for the planned Manhattan trials of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other alleged terrorists, U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln released the following statement:

“I have genuine concerns about using the United States criminal justice system for trying enemy combatants who are currently detained at Guantanamo Bay or who might be charged in the future with acts of international terrorism. That’s why earlier this week, I sent a letter to Attorney General Holder urging him to reconsider his decision to try the alleged conspirators just blocks away from where the twin towers once stood.  I believe these individuals are war criminals and that trying them in civilian courts gives them a public forum for their cause, potentially compromises classified intelligence and unnecessarily places our national security at greater risk,” said Lincoln.

Last November, Lincoln also supported an amendment to the FY2010 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act that called for the United States to try anyone suspected of involvement in the 9/11 attacks in a military commission and not a federal court.

Lincoln Leads Effort to Expand Trade Opportunities

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Washington – U.S. Senator Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry today was joined by 17 other Senators in a letter to the President, supporting his pledge to double American exports and pass pending trade agreements. The President announced this goal during Wednesday night’s State of the Union address.

“As Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, creating jobs and putting our economy back on the right track is my top priority. Opening more markets for agricultural producers will help Arkansas farmers and rural communities who have felt the devastating effects of the current economic climate. I was pleased to hear the President say he is committed to increasing American exports in his State of the Union address and look forward to working with him and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to meet this goal,” Lincoln said.

Griffin Files End-Of-Year Fundraising Report

Friday, January 29th, 2010

LITTLE ROCK – Second District Congressional candidate, U.S. Army Reservist and former U.S. Attorney Tim Griffin today announced the filing of his end-of-year report with the Federal Election Commission and that he raised $261,457.58 for the fourth quarter of 2009.

“Our fundraising represents the strength of our grassroots, neighbor to neighbor campaign to return common sense conservative values to Congress,” Griffin said. “I am humbled by the hundreds of individual Arkansans who are backing my first run for office in hopes of electing a Congressman who will work for us, not against us.

“Our campaign will continue to build momentum and discuss the issues important to the Second District, including private sector job creation, reigning in the national debt, and reducing the role of government in our lives,” Griffin added.

Since Griffin entered the Second District race in late September he has raised a total of $391,762.58.

Griffin ended 2009 with $316,535.42 cash on hand.

USDA Grant to Create Healthy Urban Food Enterprise Development Center in Arkansas

Friday, January 29th, 2010

WASHINGTON, Jan. 28, 2010 – Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is awarding $900,000 to the Wallace Center at Winrock International, Little Rock, Ark., to run the Healthy Urban Food Enterprise Development (HUFED) Center. This center will work to increase access to healthy, affordable foods, including locally produced agricultural products to underserved communities.

“This ambitious effort will create a national center to help establish local and regional food systems and get healthy food into low-income communities, which are important components of USDA’s ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ initiative,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

Congress created the HUFED Center in the 2008 Farm Bill. The center is designed to respond to the need to redevelop a food enterprise structure in the United States to make more healthy, affordable food available in low-income areas; to improve access for small and mid-sized agricultural producers; and to promote positive economic activities generated from attracting healthy food enterprises into underserved communities. The HUFED Center will provide training and technical assistance for food enterprises and award sub-grants to eligible entities for healthy food enterprise development.

The Wallace Center supports entrepreneurs and communities as they build a new, 21st century food system that is healthier for people, the environment and the economy.  HUFED will build on Wallace’s expertise in economic development through local food enterprises and will work with the National Good Food Network, a partnership of nonprofits, for-profits, researchers, government, funders and practitioners dedicated to “scaling-up” the aggregation and distribution of local food.

“The Wallace Center is a natural choice to house the Healthy Urban Food Development Enterprise Center. With years of experience in building local economies, creating new jobs, and health promotion, I have no doubt that the Wallace Center will be a tremendous asset in supporting greater access to health food, both in Arkansas and around the country,” Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee Chairman Blanche Lincoln said.

More information on the HUFED Center can be found online at http://www.wallacecenter.org/our-work/current-initiatives/healthy-urban-food-enterprise-development-center/healthy-urban-food-enterprise-development-center

USDA’s ‘Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food’ initiative emphasizes the need for a fundamental and critical reconnection between producers and consumers. The effort builds on the 2008 Farm Bill, which provides for increases and flexibility for USDA programs in an effort to promote local foods. Aimed at strengthening the connection between farmers and consumers, the initiative also aims to support local and regional food systems for Americans, increase economic opportunities for local farmers, and expand access to healthy food.

The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food website, at www.usda.gov/knowyourfarmer, features social media tools to help focus the public conversation about farming and food, while engaging American agriculture and linking producers to customers.

Through federal funding and leadership for research, education and extension programs, NIFA focuses on investing in science and solving critical issues impacting people’s daily lives and the nation’s future. For more information, visit www.nifa.usda.gov.

Win 2012 DVD Science Of Superstition this Weekend from KFFB 106.1

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Win 2012 DVD Science Of Superstition this Weekend January 30-31st from KFFB 106.1

December 21, 2012: the end date of the sophisticated Long Count Calendar created by the ancient Maya in Central America. Countless books and websites, magazine articles and newspaper headlines debate its meaning, with enthusiasts in two camps: those forecasting apocalypse–the end of time–and those who see a coming renewal, a rebirth of consciousness.

Adding fuel to the debate, some scientists see the increasing number of natural disasters in recent years as evidence of a catastrophic climax of events in 2012. How much of what we’re hearing is science and how much is superstition? In this film the leading researchers, writers and scientists in the field tell us exactly what this date means to them, why it’s important, and what we should expect.

Featured in the film are Graham Hancock, John Major Jenkins, Daniel Pinchbeck, Alberto Villoldo, Anthony Aveni, Robert Bauval, Jim Marrs, Walter Cruttenden, Lawrence E. Joseph, Alonso Mendez, Douglas Rushkoff, John Anthony West and Benito Vegas Duran.
