Griffin: What Has President Obama Done to Address Debt Since Congress Passed Budget Control Act in August?

Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement after House passage of a resolution of disapproval (H.J. Res. 98) that he cosponsored, regarding President Obama’s request to increase the debt limit:

“The President’s decision to raise the debt limit by an additional $1.2 trillion came just four days after it was reported that our national debt had eclipsed the size of our entire domestic economy, rising to over $15 trillion.  Under this Administration, the debt limit has been raised six times and our debt has grown by 45 percent.  The real question here is what specifically has the President done to address our national debt since Congress passed the Budget Control Act in August?  The answer, unfortunately, is nothing.  With today’s vote, we in the House are trying to get the President’s attention.  It is time for the President to recognize that we must tackle our debt problem now, and he must work with us to reduce government spending and save vital programs like Medicare and Social Security for current and future beneficiaries.  House Republicans passed a budget that addresses the debt head on.  The President and Senate should join us.”
