Independence County Historical Society Meeting

Independence County Historical Society Meeting

How old is Batesville?  What kinds of claims can be made for the early settlement of the White River valley?

“Probably more to the point,” says George Lankford, president of the Independence County Historical Society, “why is the question so complicated?  What can we really say about the early days of north Arkansas?”

These topics will be explored at the quarterly meeting of the Historical Society Sunday, April 19, at 2 p.m. at the Old Independence County Museum.  The public is invited to join the society as they consider the hindrances and advantages in the historical settling of the White River valley and the creation of Batesville.

Lankford, the current president of the ICHS as it approaches the celebration of its fiftieth year of service to the county, will be the speaker.   Using maps and pictures of the early days of the valley, he will try to assess what contributed to the settlement period and what hindrances had to be overcome.

“Everyone should note that the meeting will be at OIRM this Sunday,” Lankford pointed out.  “We meet in various places, but this time we will be hosted by the Museum.  Everybody is welcome.”

In addition to the program, the Society’s annual Heritage Award will be presented.  For more information, call the museum (793-2121) or Lankford (698-1061).
