President George W. Bush to speak at Harding University

SEARCY, Ark. — President George W. Bush will speak at Harding University April 22, 2010, as part of the 2009-10 Distinguished Lecture Series sponsored by the American Studies Institute. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Benson Auditorium. Although it will be a ticketed event, it is free and open to the public.

Bush was elected 43rd president of the United States in November 2000 and was re-elected in 2004. Before his presidency, he served six years as governor of Texas and was the first governor in the state’s history to be elected to consecutive four-year terms.

The son of Barbara and former President George H.W. Bush, he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University and served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard before attending Harvard Business School where he earned a Master of Business Administration degree.

During eight years as president, Bush instituted federal tax cuts, added a prescription drug benefit to Medicare, implemented free trade agreements with more than a dozen nations, and launched a global HIV/AIDS initiative. He also appointed Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Other speakers in this year’s series include Nonie Darwish, Cynthia Cooper and Laura Ingraham. For more information, contact the American Studies Institute office at 501-279-4497.
