WASHINGTON – Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement after the Senate passed his bill (H.R. 3870) Wednesday evening designating the U.S. Post Office in Rose Bud, Arkansas as the Nicky ‘Nick’ Daniel Bacon Post Office:
“I applaud the Senate for passing my bill to honor one of Arkansas’s finest sons. Nick Bacon dedicated his life to serving our country. He earned the Medal of Honor for his distinguished service in Vietnam, and assisted fellow veterans for decades afterward. Nick Bacon’s example is one all Arkansans can admire, and I’m pleased the Senate has joined the House in honoring his legacy.”
In 1963, at the age of 17, he forged his mother’s signature so he could enlist in the Army. During the Vietnam War, Bacon served as a first sergeant in the U.S. Army. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat in Tam Ky, Vietnam. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. After retiring from active duty, he continued his service as the director of the Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs. Bacon passed on July 17, 2010 after fighting a long battle with cancer.
The House passed H.R. 3870 in July.
