It has been a long, exceptionally hot and dry summer. Utility scammers are aware of this and are seeking to steal your identity and your money by playing upon any potential anxiety and fears of Petit Jean Electric’s members. These fraudulent scam efforts seem to especially target the elderly, but it is certainly not limited to them. Petit Jean Electric is aware of two scams that are being perpetrated upon its members. There may be many others, so please be aware.
In the first scam members may be asked to provide sensitive personal information, such as their Social Security Number, to receive direct government payment toward their utility bill.
In the second scam someone may call claiming to represent Petit Jean Electric Cooperative. The Petit Jean Electric member is told that his/her account has been placed on hold and is subject to disconnect unless money is sent to a certain address, or payment information is provided over the phone. The name the scammer may use and the Caller ID number on the member’s phone are both “spoofed” (false) and provide no lead to law enforcement authorities, etc.
Petit Jean Electric Cooperative strongly urges our members to NEVER give out sensitive information such as their Social Security Number, credit/debit card information, bank account information, etc., especially when contacted by others who you do not know or trust. NEVER wire money to strangers. NEVER fall for high-pressure tactics.
Petit Jean Electric Cooperative will never call you soliciting sensitive personal and/or financial information from you. If you are ever contacted by a stranger who requires you to give out sensitive personal and/or financial information, no matter how good the offer, you are wise to be very suspicious. Simply give Petit Jean Electric a call to find out the status of your account. The important difference is you are making the call. If you know you will have difficulty paying your electric utility bill by the due date you may be surprised at the ways that Petit Jean can work with you.
