Older Americans Month 2009 Living Today for a Better Tomorrow

May is Older Americans Month, a great time to bring attention to the issues that affect older adults and create community-wide opportunities to help older Americans improve their quality of life. This year’s theme is “Living Today For a Better Tomorrow,”

By 2030, one in every five Americans will be age 65 or older. When May as Older Americans Month was first designated in 1963 only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday, today there are over 74 million Americans 65 years of age or older.

In 2009, the White River Area Agency on Aging, Inc. will celebrate its 30th Anniversary of assisting older adults in north central Arkansas to remain independent for as long as possible. The agency provides over 20 different services to help older persons and their families maintain their quality of life. Knowledge and awareness of long term care service options is critical in assisting older adults to remain independent.

Help is just a phone call away. The agency has a toll free number 1-800-382-3205. According to Ed Haas, Executive Director “the agency serves older adults of all incomes.” “Our job is to assist older persons and their families with their long term care options and needs.” The agency employs over 525 persons throughout the 10 counties to meet those needs.
