There were no major military battles in the county during the Civil War, but Independence County turned out to be an important area for the protection of Little Rock and the launching of attacks into Missouri. The result was that both Confederate and Union armies spent time occupying the area during the years of the Civil War 150 years ago.

Old Independence is a regional museum serving a 12-county area: Baxter, Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Marion, Poinsett, Sharp, Stone, White, and Woodruff. Parts of these present-day counties comprised the original Independence County in 1820’s Arkansas territory.
