Vicksburg, Miss – Now that summer is in full swing, the Vicksburg District (District), Corps of Engineers (Corps), is taking an active approach toward educating the public about water safety procedures at their lake recreational areas, beaches and river projects located in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
DeGray Lake, Lake Ouachita, and Lake Greeson in Arkansas and Sardis Lake, Grenada Lake, and Enid Lake in Mississippi offer camping facilities as well as day-use activities such as picnicking, swimming, boating, and fishing.
The Louisiana Field Office offers day-use activities and some camping at the Ouachita-Black River, the Red River, Bayou Bodcau, Caddo Lake, and Wallace Lake. The Riverton Recreation Area located along the Ouachita River maintains the only beach.
Safety features found at the District’s water recreational facilities include barrier buoys, depth designation poles, rescue stations, reach poles, throw bags, boat restriction buoys, a bulletin board with swimming rules and water safety regulations, and a life jacket loaner board. Corps park rangers and employees instruct swimmers and other water recreational participants the proper usage of personal flotation devices (pfd) and life-saver procedures. The “loaner board” is available for those needing to borrow a properly fitting pfd for their visit.
