Dr. Rebecca O. Weaver has been appointed dean of the College of Communication at Harding University

Dr. Rebecca O. Weaver has been appointed dean of the College of Communication at Harding University by President David B. Burks.

A professor and chair of the communication sciences and disorders department, Weaver began teaching at Harding in 1975. She then worked as a speech pathologist in Texas public schools before returning to the University in 1984. She became chair of the department in 2007.

 

Weaver is a member of the Arkansas and American Speech-Language-Hearing Associations. She is currently the Arkansas representative to the advisory board for ASHA. She is also a member of the International Commission on Health Care Professions Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology Professional Standards Committee of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. 

The College of Communication houses the communication department which includes programs of study in mass communication, theatre and oral communication, and the communication sciences and disorders department dedicated to the field of speech-language pathology. 

Weaver was responsible for developing Harding’s graduate program in speech-language pathology and the SLP program at the University’s international campus in Zambia, Africa, where graduate students can study abroad. She taught the first-ever speech-language pathology course in the country of Zambia at the George Benson Teacher’s College. 

Weaver graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Harding College in 1973 and went on to earn a master’s degree from University of Mississippi and a doctorate degree from University of Memphis. She is an Arkansas-licensed speech-language pathologist and holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by ASHA. In addition, she has a Texas Teacher Credential in speech-language pathology. 

Harding had a record enrollment this year of more than 6,600 students from all 50 states and 49 foreign countries. It is the largest private university in Arkansas and attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other private university in the state. Harding also maintains campuses in Australia, Chilé, England, France, Greece, Italy and Zambia.
