Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement that the White River has been designated a National Blueway:
“As a proponent of conservation and a proud representative from the Natural State, I am thrilled that Arkansas’s White River is one of the first rivers in the country to be designated by the U.S. Department of Interior as a National Blueway. Arkansas’s rivers and wetlands not only add to our state’s beauty, they supply clean water and provide economic and recreational opportunities for all Arkansans. I commend everyone who worked to make this conservation effort a reality.”
The National Blueways System (NBS) was established in May 2012 by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) to recognize large river systems conserved through diverse local partnerships. The White River spans more than 700 miles from the Ozark Mountains to the Mississippi River. Its total watershed is comprised of more than 17.8-million acres and is known for its scenic beauty, habitats and rare wildlife. The Connecticut River was the first National Blueway, and the White River Watershed is the first to undergo the nomination, evaluation, and recognition process.
Participation in the NBS is entirely voluntary and locally-driven. National Blueway designation does not add additional regulations or requirements, and it does not change private property or water rights. Federal, state and local authorities are not affected.
