Harding University Celebrates Relay for Life in the Fight Against Cancer

Harding University students will collaborate to produce an all-night event in the fight against cancer at the University’s fifth annual Relay for Life. The activities will be held Oct. 11 from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the front lawn

Harding students work throughout the semester to collect money through fundraisers, donations and sponsorships. Teams will raise money through offering food and games at their booths, and fun activities including a bounce house will also be available. The theme for the festivities is “A Fairy Tale Event.” Each team will choose a corresponding theme and decorate their booths accordingly.

The event will feature performances by Four West, Belles and Beaux, The Fable and the Fury, and Keef & Co. In the event of rain, Relay for Life will be held in the Ganus Athletic Center.

Relay for Life raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Participants have the opportunity to honor those who have been affected by cancer and raise money to help those in need. Team members alternate walking or running around the perimeter of the front lawn, and at least one team member is required to be on the track at all times

Cancer survivors are encouraged to walk in the Survivors Lap and take the first lap around the track symbolizing their victory over illness. A Luminaria Ceremony also takes place after dark to honor those that have been lost to cancer. A final Fight Back Ceremony encourages participants to take action and continue to persevere in the fight against cancer.
