HardingUniversity announces 2012-13 Distinguished Lecture Series

 

The 2012-13 American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series will kick off at Harding University in September with CURE Founder and President Star Parker and will wrap up in April with Bill Simon, president and chief executive officer of Walmart U.S.

 

Star Parker

Sept. 20, 2012, 7:30 p.m., Benson Auditorium

Parker is the founder and president of CURE, the Center for Urban Renewal and Education, a non-profit think tank that promotes market based public policy to fight poverty. Parker has seven years of first-hand experience in the grip of welfare dependency. She is a regular commentator on CNN, TBN, CSPAN, CBN, and FOX News. Her articles and quotes continuously appear in major publications around the world. In addition to heading CURE, Parker is a syndicated columnist for Scripps News Service, offering weekly op-eds to more than 300 newspapers and Internet news sites worldwide. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation. 

 

Karl Rove

Oct. 16, 2012, 7 p.m., Benson Auditorium

Rove was the deputy chief of staff and senior advisor during the George W. Bush administration. At the White House he oversaw the Offices of Strategic Initiatives, Political Affairs, Public Liaison, and Intergovernmental Affairs and was deputy chief of staff for policy, coordinating the White House policy-making process. Rove writes a weekly op-ed for the Wall Street Journal and is the author of the New York Times Bestseller, “Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight.” He has written for various publications, including The Daily Beast, Financial Times, Forbes, FoxNews.com, HumanEvents.com, The Times, Washington Post, and The Weekly Standard. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation. 

 

Stephen Moore

Feb. 7, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Benson Auditorium

Moore joined The Wall Street Journal as a member of the editorial board and senior economics writer May 31, 2005. He splits his time between Washington, D.C., and New York, focusing on economic issues, including budget, tax and monetary policy. Moore has served as a senior economist on the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, as a budget expert for the Heritage Foundation, and as a senior economics fellow at the Cato Institute, where he published dozens of studies on federal and state tax and budget policy. He was a consultant to the National Economic Commission in l987 and research director for President Ronald Reagan’s commission on privatization. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation.

 

Mike Beebe

March 5, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Benson Auditorium  

Since taking office in 2007, Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe has made improving education, expanding the state’s economy and cutting taxes top priorities. Arkansas has avoided massive cuts in services and tax increases suffered by other states while achieving more than a half-billion dollars in tax relief during his first term. Beebe has overseen Arkansas’ rise in national education rankings and the announcement of more than 26,000 new jobs. He has helped conclude the lengthy court dispute over Arkansas’ public-school system, secured the largest single capital investment in Arkansas public schools, and made record investments in higher education.


Bill Simon

April 25, 2013, 7:30 p.m., Benson Auditorium

President and Chief Executive Officer of Walmart U.S., Simon is responsible for the strategic direction and performance of Walmart U.S., leading 1.3 million associates and approximately 3,900 stores. Simon and his team are focused on executing Walmart’s core business model – lowering costs in order to offer customers lower prices – and fulfilling the company’s mission of saving people money so they can live better. From 2007 to 2010, Simon was the chief operating officer for Walmart U.S. where he worked to drive innovation and improvement throughout the business. This lecture is co-sponsored by the Young America’s Foundation.
