LITTLE ROCK, AR—Secretary of State Charlie Daniels today invited those intending to run for public office in 2010 to make it official starting on Monday, March 1. The week-long filing period ends at noon on March 8.
Secretary Daniels will host a program in the second floor rotunda of the Arkansas State Capitol at 11:40 am to kick-off the 2010 candidate filing period. Special guest Terry Wallace of Oaklawn, known as “the most recognizable voice in Arkansas,” will be on hand to call the start of the political horse racing season.
Candidate packets will be available starting at 11:00 am for those who would like to fill out the required paperwork in advance of the official filing start time of 12:00 noon. In addition to the Secretary of State’s Election Division, representatives from the State Board of Election Commissioners, Ethics Commission, and the political parties will be available to assist with the filing process.
The public will be able to get real-time filing updates by joining www.twitter.com and following @ARSecofState. Daily filing reports and additional candidate information will be available on www.sos.ar.gov. Filing lists will also be updated and displayed continuously on screens in both the second floor rotunda and first floor visitor’s center.
“Not everyone will be able to make it to the Capitol to see who files for what and when. That’s why our office will be tweeting the filings as they happen,” Secretary Daniels said. “I encourage all the political junkies and potential candidates out there to join Twitter, if you haven’t already, and follow our office.”
All individuals seeking the 180 open state, district, and nonpartisan judicial offices in the May 18 Preferential Primary and Nonpartisan General Election file with the Secretary of State’s office. (Candidates for county, municipal, and township offices file with their county clerk during this period.) Daniels has already certified 11 nonpartisan judicial candidates who filed by petition rather than by paying a filing fee. Additional candidates for the 23 open nonpartisan judicial positions may file during this period by paying a fee commensurate to the salary of the office sought.
