Snyder Requests Entries For Congressional Art Competition

An Artistic Discovery: The 2009 Congressional Art Competition for high school students

Little Rock, AR – Congressman Vic Snyder (AR-02) reminds central Arkansas high school students that the deadline for the annual Congressional Art Competition is Tuesday, May 5th, at 5 p.m.

Each year the U.S. Congress sponsors the Congressional Art Competition.  Students compete in a regional contest, and the overall winning piece of art from each district is displayed in a national exhibit located along a pedestrian walkway leading to the U.S. Capitol.

High school students who live in the second congressional district — Conway, Faulkner, Perry, Pulaski, Saline, Van Buren, White, and Yell counties — are eligible for the competition.  The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) Department of Art will administer and judge the second district competition.  All artwork submitted must be original and may include work from the following mediums: paintings, drawings, collages, photography, computer-generated works, mixed media, and prints. Masks and sculptures are not permitted. The submitted piece may not be larger than 30”x30”x4” (30 inches high, 30 inches wide, and 4 inches deep) including the frame, if any.  Entries do not have to be framed.

Entries may be hand delivered or mailed to:  Mr. Brad Cushman, Gallery Director, c/o UALR Art Department, Fine Arts Building, 2801 S. University Ave., Little Rock, AR 72204.  Entries may be dropped off at UALR on May 1st, 4th, or 5th between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.  The deadline for submission of artwork for the competition is 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009.

The second district winner will be announced at a reception at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8th, in UALR Fine Arts Building, Gallery III.  Entries not chosen as the winner will be featured in a monthly exhibit at UALR.  The winner will receive free airline travel to attend a Washington D.C. reception on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, as well as complimentary custom framing from a local professional.
