Symphony at Simon Park, Sept. 27

The Conway Symphony Orchestra returns to Simon Park in downtown Conway on Friday, Sept. 27, 7:30pm for its annual community concert. This free performance promises to be a draw for all ages with music ranging from classical to Broadway to holiday cheer. Under the baton of Geoffrey Robson, the orchestra will perform pieces from Rossini, Rogers and Hammerstein, Tchaikovsky, and Bizet, including selections from The Nutcracker and The Sound of Music. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Snow Fine Arts Recital Hall on the UCA Campus; a decision will be announced on the CSO website and Facebook page by 3:00 pm that day. The concert is underwritten by Southwestern Energy, with Media Sponsorship provided by the Log Cabin Democrat, and Hospitality Sponsorship from Cross Creek Sandwich Shop.

“The theme of the concert is a ‘get to know you’ concert,’ explains Robson. “It is great music for me to get to know the orchestra and vice versa; it also gives the audience a chance to see me conduct and hear the orchestra play a wide variety of styles of great symphonic music.”

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets, but no pets, please. The Green Cart Deli will be on hand with your favorite hot dog combination, always a crowd favorite. Some downtown restaurants will be offering deals that night as well, including a special at U.S. Pizza, and 10% off at Mike’s Place for audience members.

Symphony in Simon Park will kick off an entire week of activities for 2013 ArtsFest, organized by Conway Alliance for the Arts (CAFTA), including performances and interactive programs in dance, theater, literature, music, film, and visual art. Immediately prior to the concert, the caboose at the park will be transformed into a knitted work of art with a yarn bombing piece by artist Julie Isom. With a general theme of light, ArtsFest events will be held through Oct. 5 at several locations, and are all open to the public. See www.ArtsinConway for a full schedule.

“We’re excited to be a part of ArtsFest again this year,’ says Vicki Crockett, general manager of the Conway Symphony Orchestra. “Having access to great art is so important to our community, and the concert is just the beginning of fabulous activities throughout the week!”
