Testimony Begins in Van Buren County Capital Murder Case

Testimony began today in the capital murder case of Rodney Jones. Jones is accused of the murder of his former wife, Orzonia Fischer. Prosecutors have alleged that Jones traveled from Colorado to Van Buren County where he shot and killed Ms. Fisher.

Jury selection was completed late last night after a long day of questioning by Prosecuting Attorney Marcus Vaden and defense attorney Bill James. Those jurors who were selected now begin the task of weighing the evidence and determining whether Jones is guilty of the murder and if he should be put to death for that crime.

At present, the State has presented testimony from three witnesses. Jeff Bittle of the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office testified about what he witnessed when he arrived at the scene. The jury also heard from Lynn Fischer, who was the husband of the victim. Mr. Fischer was having his haircut by his wife in their home when she was fatally shot in the back. Also testifying today was Arkansas State Police Crime Scene Investigator Joe Carter.
