US Army Corps Of Engineers Mat Sinking Unit On River

Vicksburg, Ms… The US Army Corps of Engineers Mat Sinking Unit (MSU) will be in operation near Island 35 on the Arkansas side of the Mississippi River through September 8, 2010.

Island 35 is located at approximately river mile 764 near Wilson, Arkansas which is located approximately 40 miles north of West Memphis.

The MSU will be laying approximately 13,000 squares of revetment equivalent to approximately 25 acres.

The MSU consists of 6 vessels that lay revetment made of articulated concrete mat on the banks of waterways and rivers throughout the U.S. to help with the prevention of erosion. It is the only one of its kind in the world and

deploys during the traditional low water season from July to December.
