Volunteers Needed To Assist Children with Cancer

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ASSIST
CHILDREN WITH CANCER
June 13-19 2009
Camp Quality Pairs Kids with Compassionate Companions

Bald Knob Arkansas: Camp Quality USA, a network of camps for children with cancer, is currently seeking volunteers to serve as companions for children with cancer who attend a week-long summer camp session.  Campers range from 4 to 18 years of age and vary in stages of their cancer treatment or remission.

Camp Quality’s goal is to allow children with cancer to be children again by offering a stress-free environment that delivers exciting activities in a medically-supervised setting.  The camp also gives parents a much-needed rest, knowing that the highest quality program has been selected for their child.  Every child who registers for the week-long session is matched with an adult companion who accompanies and assists the child each day at all camp activities.

“Our volunteer companions are a crucial part of this very special week,” says Penny Howard camp director of Camp Quality Arkansas.  “By making this time commitment, our volunteers are bringing a great deal of joy to the lives of these children.”

Companions must be at least 18 years of age and are mentors, cheerleaders and role models for the children.  Each companion receives training before camp and then is paired with a camper.  Health care experience is not required, as the camps have medically-trained staff on-site.

Those interested in this volunteer opportunity must fill out an application for consideration, provide two references and pass a criminal background check.  Applications can be found at ar.campqualityusa.org.  The deadline for submission is May 15, 2009.

Camp Quality USA operates 15 camps across the United States and provides year-round support programs for children with cancer and their families.  Programs include the signature weeklong camp and other year-round programs.  Each camp is volunteer-run and community funded.
