Bethlehem House Hosts Author of The Shack-#1 Selling Book
Bethlehem House will host the Conway appearance of Paul Young, author of The Shack. Young will speak at the event-fundraiser for the shelter on Monday, August 17th, 2009 at 7pm at the Conway Campus of Fellowship Bible Church on Hogan Lane. This is Young’s first ever appearance in Conway. He is the author of the # 1 New York Times bestseller that explores the question, “Where is God in a world of pain?” The Shack is a phenomenal success having sold over six million copies! This year, Young’s book is being released in over thirty-five foreign language translations around the world. Young worked as a janitor until March 2008 near his home in Portland, Oregon. He grew up as a third-culture kid, the son of missionary parents among the Dani, a ritualistic cannibal tribe of New Guinea. Young’s novel, set in the Oregon wilderness, “is a metaphor,” he says, “for the place we keep all of our pain, sorrow, abuse and disappointments about life. The encounter with God at The Shack represents eleven years of my adult life spent in recovery and healing.” Thousands of readers report that The Shack has made a significant change in their own lives. After reading the book, many abandoned plans to commit suicide. Others reported they discovered hope and comfort after the tragic loss of a child or after experiencing disappointment with seemingly empty religion. Because of this book, Young and his childhood abusers have reconciled. Young says, “Unexpected and unanticipated, this little story is touching the precious places of the human soul in transformational ways and can only be properly characterized as ‘a God-thing’. I am humbled and grateful to be invited on this beautiful though sometimes painful adventure.” Young, father of six, wrote The Shack as a Christmas gift for his children three years ago. At the time, he didn’t have enough money to print it for them at the local office supply store until after the holidays. The $20 event tickets can be purchased at the Conway Chamber of Commerce, downtown, at Advanced Physical Therapy on Clayton Street, behind the Walgreen’s at Oak and Harkrider and at Bethlehem House at 930 Faulkner St. For more information, call 501-329-4862.
