CONWAY — The seventh annual University of Central Arkansas Film Festival is set for 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, in the Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall on the UCA campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

While there will be no popcorn for the event, that shouldn’t stop moviegoers seeing some of the best offerings of UCA students, according to Joe Dull, assistant professor of digital filmmaking.

“We’ll have romantic pieces, action, comedies and everything in between,” he said of the event that is expected to last about 2 1-2 hours and that will feature 15 short films.

Selected faculty members will select the movies that will be shown.

“We filter out the best works to show,” Dull said.

The festival is jointly sponsored by UCA’s Department of Mass Communication and Theatre and the UCA Film Club, and it includes three categories: Music Video, Documentary and Narrative. Judges from the local film and television industries will score the films during the festival, and awards for Best Narrative Short, Best Documentary, Best Music Video, Best Direction, Best Sound Design, Best Producing, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay or story will be announced at an after-party for film students and faculty.

UCA’s digital filmmaking program is the only one in the state and includes a Master of Fine Arts degree.

“We have some very talented students,” Dull said. “The works that will be represented will some of the strongest examples of their work. Anyone who is a fan of movies should come and see the work that is being done.”
