Arkansas Attorney General’s Office offers a variety of tips For Post-Flood Damage Recovery

NORTH LITTLE ROCK – Recent severe weather and storms over the past week have affected a great portion of the State of Arkansas, to include major flooding in several areas.  As the flood water begins to recede and residents are allowed back it is important to remember that the recovery process can be lengthy.

Water damage to homes will be a major concern.  During the cleanup process, it is important to keep in mind that the use of reputable cleanup personnel can help prevent homeowners and renters from being taken advantage of.

The Arkansas Attorney General’s Office offers a variety of tips that can help residents find a reliable and reputable contractor to assist with the cleanup process.  These tips include:

  • Asking friends or family for recommendations of a contractor they have used in the past or check the references of the contractor.
  • Verifying that the contractor is appropriately licensed by contacting the Arkansas Contractor’s Licensing Board.  Additionally, the Arkansas Contractor’s Licensing Board may be able to help a resident determine if a contractor has had complaints filed against their business.
  • Check with the Attorney General’s Office of the Better Business Bureau to find out if the company has a complaint history.
  • Avoid home repair solicitors who request upfront payment or refuse to provide a written contract.
  • Shop around and get more than one estimate for home repairs.
  • Ensure that any contract for work or repairs includes the details of the work to be completed, the type of materials that will be required, and the name and address of the contractor.
  • Ensure that all warranties and guarantees are in writing.
