Civil War Sesquicentennial Markers Dedication

The dedication of two Civil War Sesquicentennial Markers will be Tuesday, May 26, in Mountain View. Beginning at 9:30am music from the Civil War era will be presented by Charley Sandage, Robert and Mary Gillihan on the courthouse lawn. Ceremonies for the first marker will be at 10 am. This marker commemorates all four skirmishes that occurred in this area: Kickapoo Bottoms May 29-30, 1862; Knight’s Cove June 19,1862; Sylamore Jan.23 and 26,1864; and Buck Horn May 25, 1864.

Speakers include representatives from the Stone County Quorum Court, Sons of the Confederacy, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Stone County Historical Society. Descendants of Civil War veterans who served from the area that became Stone County will be recognized.

Thirty minutes following this ceremony around 11:30 a second marker honoring the skirmishes at Kickapoo Bottoms and Sylamore will be unveiled at Allison, AR on the Anglers lot. The Sylamore area along the river was the scene of much activity during the Civil War.

The public is invited to participate in both ceremonies.
