Competitive shooters will gather Aug. 15 to honor the memory of Zachary Lillard at the Zachary “Kern” Lillard Memorial Trap Tournament at the Paul H. “Rocky” Willmuth Shooting Sports Complex.

Lillard, a member of the Lyon College Trap Team, died June 6 in a canoeing accident. He had recently completed his freshman year at Lyon and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity.

“Kern was one of our best shooters, one of our best friends, someone you were guaranteed to have a good time with, and a true blessing to his family, friends and community. I intend for this to become an annual event in his memory and hope future generations of students may benefit from the scholarship fund in Zach’s name,” said Landon Downing, assistant director of admissions and the team’s coordinator.

Practice rounds will begin at 9 a.m., and the competition will kick off at 10. This is an individual style tournament with two flights. First, second, and third place prizes will be awarded in each flight. There will be two rounds of 25 clays each. The registration fee for the tournament is $75, which includes a meal. Hawg’s, owned by Lillard’s family, will provide barbeque. Plates will be for sale for $10 to those not competing. Spectators may attend for free, but donations would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be made to the Zachary Kern Lillard Scholarship Fund at Citizens Bank in Batesville. All proceeds from the tournament will go to the scholarship fund.
