The Ozark Foothills Literacy Project is asking members of the community to donate items
for its first annual yard sale scheduled for Saturday, April 20 from 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. In case of inclement
weather, the yard sale will be held the following Saturday. Small items can be dropped off at the Independence
County Library, 368 E. Main St., Batesville, AR. Donors should call the library in advance at 870-793-8814 to
arrange for a staff member to meet them at the loading door in the back of the library. Those donating larger items
should call the Literacy Project at 870-793-5912 to discuss drop off or pick up.
Last year, the Literacy Project’s volunteer tutors and AmeriCorps members provided free reading and English
tutoring for over 100 adult students. Funds earned from this event will help purchase new books and other
educational materials.
Donation requests include furniture, appliances, dishes, linens, knick-knacks, yard items, tools, clothing or
anything that could earn money for the cause. “We appreciate the support the community continues to show for
our students,” said Nicole Stroud, Literacy Project director. “I think we’ll have something for everyone by the time
the sale opens.” Literacy Project staff will pick up donated items left over from other yard sales or garage sales, if
scheduled in advance. The Literacy Project is also encouraging businesses to make donations for the event.
The Ozark Foothills Literacy Project, based in Batesville, AR is a United Way member agency. The Literacy
Project relies on trained volunteers to provide one-on-one tutoring for students in Independence, Sharp and Fulton
