KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) joined other members of the House Armed Services Committee in visiting soldiers and meeting with U.S. and Afghan officials during a two-day trip to Afghanistan.
“It was great to meet and personally thank some of the brave men and women who are defending our nation from our enemies and working to prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a breeding ground for terror. The visit was especially meaningful since it occurred over the Memorial Day weekend when we take time to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom,” Griffin said.
On Friday, the congressional delegation met with NATO leaders in Belgium and was briefed on ongoing operations in Afghanistan and Libya. Rep. Griffin spent Saturday and Sunday travelling around Afghanistan, where he met with military commanders, including Gen. Petraeus, and service men and women, before departing the region.
“I appreciated the opportunity to hear from our commanders and servicemembers first hand regarding our efforts in Afghanistan. I was honored to be flown in a C130 with ‘The Rock’ on its tail and flown by Arkansans from Little Rock Air Force Base.”
During his visit, Griffin provided soldiers with cards made by students from Collegeville Elementary in Bryant and children from Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock. The cards included personal notes of encouragement for the soldiers.
“It was an honor to be able to hand deliver these letters to our servicemembers. It is important for them to know that we have not forgotten the sacrifice they and their families are making on our behalf,” Griffin said.
Rep. Griffin met with Estonia’s Minister of Defense, Mart Laar, regarding his country’s leadership on cyber issues and toured the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Center of Excellence before returning to Washington, D.C.
