Arkansas School for Mathematics Sciences and the Arts admissions counselors will be visiting South Side High School in Van Buren County

Arkansas School for Mathematics Sciences and the Arts admissions counselors will be visiting South Side High School – Thursday, Oct. 25 in Van Buren County.

The admissions staff will speak with students about the school and qualifications for enrollment. ASMSA, located in Hot Springs, is one of 15 public residential high schools in the country dedicated to educating high school juniors and seniors who have a special interest and aptitude in science and math.

Enrollment is open to all Arkansas students who meet the educational criteria. All students receive free general tuition, room and board.

ASMSA classes are taught at the college level and emphasize research, writing and critical thinking skills. The school offers a variety of concurrent courses, allowing students to earn 50 – 60 hours of college credit while completing high school. Many ASMSA graduates begin college at the sophomore level, and some even begin at the junior level. The 93 students who graduated in 2012 received more than $10 million in scholarship offers.

The residential aspect of the school also helps prepare students for life in college. Beyond academics, ASMSA offers more than 30 clubs and organizations in which students can participate. In addition to traditional activities such as band, choir, drama and yearbook, some of the school’s clubs include anime, robotics, culinary, and swing dance. The school provides intramural sports and students may also choose to play on the Hot Springs High School athletic teams. The school’s location in downtown Hot Springs gives students the opportunities to participate in the city’s many cultural and social activities.

ASMSA will host an open house for prospective students and their families from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 10. Tours of the school will be available every half hour beginning at 9 a.m. Students will have the opportunity to talk to current students and teachers.
