BAAC Garden Dwellers Exhibition

The Batesville Area Arts Council is pleased to present Garden Dwellers, an exhibition by Yelena Petroukhina, at the BAAC Gallery on Main (226 E Main St) now through April 22, 2023. Please join us for the gallery reception on Friday, April 21, 5 – 7 p.m. with a brief artist talk at 6 p.m.

The exhibition explores Petroukhina’s sense of self as a Russian immigrant, searching for her new cultural frameworks and relations in the United States. Garden Dwellers features sculptural ceramics and mixed-media collages layered with surface designs and symbols alluding to interwoven and interconnected chapters of her life. Her sculptures reference traditional ceramic toys of Central Russia as a nod to her upbringing and conventional views of femininity. Petroukhina states, “Examining and rethinking my personal history is poignant, and creating sculptures is deeply cathartic.”

Yelena Petroukhina is a Russian-born contemporary ceramic artist living in Little Rock, Arkansas. She earned a Master of Arts with an emphasis in ceramics from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She has received various grants and awards, including Best in Show 2021 in the Irene Rosenzweig Biennial Juried Exhibition, and is currently a visiting artist at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Petroukhina is a teaching artist, passionate about helping students of all ages to create and appreciate art.
