Celebrate Story Books at Old Independence Regional Museum March 5

Title: Celebrate Story Books at Old Independence Regional Museum March 5
Location: located at 380 South 9th street, between Boswell and Vine Streets in Batesville
Description: Old Independence Regional Museum continues its popular Family Day series with a celebration of children’s books, illustrators, and storybook characters on Saturday, March 5, 2011, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Admission for this event is free, but donations are always appreciated. Visitors are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite story book character.

At 10 a.m., visitors will be able to tour the nationally traveling exhibit Draw Me a Story: A Century of Children’s Book Illustrators. This exhibit features original artwork from 41 children’s book illustrators. Guests are then invited to participate in the Illustrator’s Corner. Here children and adults will use their imaginations and artistic creativity to illustrate a poem or passage from a book.

Puppets are wonderful ways to tell a story. At our puppet stage visitors will make a sock puppet that resembles their favorite story book character and give it a voice by becoming a puppeteer.

Local author Mark Rorie will be on hand signing copies of his book series “The Polk Bayou Kids.” The series is set in Batesville and features the adventures of a group of local children. Facts about local history and events are skillfully woven into these fictional stories.

The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and $1.00 for children. The museum is located at 380 South 9th street, between Boswell and Vine Streets in Batesville. During your visit, stop by our gift shop. We stock many items from local artists, authors, and crafters, as well as historical toys and games.
