Delfeayo Marsalis, a renowned jazz producer and trombonist from Louisiana, will perform at the University of Central Arkansas’s Donald W. Reynolds Performance Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 26, accompanied by the UCA jazz ensembles and the traditional jazz band.
Admission is free for the 7:30 p.m. performance. Doors will open at 7:15 p.m.
The performance is part of Conway’s ArtsFest.
“He has his own quintet but while here, he is performing as soloist with the UCA jazz ensembles,” said Dr. Jackie Lamar, professor of saxophone. “Jazz is the only unique American art form and is enjoyable for all listeners.”
Marsalis, a New Orleans native, was born to a family where jazz was deeply appreciated. He is the son of Ellis Jr., a pianist, music producer and acclaimed music educator, and brother to Wynton, Branford and Jason, three talented jazz musicians. Branford Marsalis performed at Reynolds in 2008; Wynton Marsalis performed there in 2011. At 13, Delfeayo Marsalis discovered his flair with the trombone, and at 17 he produced his first recording for his father.
Marsalis captured the hearts of international audience when he performed abroad with bandleaders such as Art Blakey, Max Roach and Elvin Jones, Abdullah Ibrahim and Slide Hampton. Since his first recording, Marsalis has produced more than 100 recordings for artists such as Spike Lee, Marcus Roberts, Adam Makowicz, Terence Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and many more.
Marsalis is a celebrated producer of acoustic jazz recordings and has drawn critical praise from such publications as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and San Francisco Examiner.
Lamar said Marsalis would perform “Struttin’ With Some Barbecue” and “Oh, Didn’t He Ramble.” The rest of the program will include selections from “Say When”, “Skylark” and “Lone Warrior”.
