Deltha Shell Name President-Elect of the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs

 Deltha Shell, Director of the TRiO Student Support Services grant Ozarka College, was recently named president-elect of the Arkansas Association of Student Assistance Programs (AASAP). Elections for the position were held at the organization’s annual conference October 6-9, 2012.

 The position is a three-year term; she will serve as president elect, president and past president. Responsibilities include planning and organizing the AASAP annual conference, coordinating meetings with Arkansas legislators to advance the TRiO community and awareness of the disadvantaged student, and serving on the regional board of the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP).

 “I have been active in the AASAP organization for several years. I am very honored to serve as AASAP President-Elect,” said Deltha. AASAP is an organization of TRiO professionals and other student success programs. TRiO is a federal funded grant program specifically designed to assist students who are low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled to pursue a degree in higher education. The AASAP organization works with policy makers at the local, state and national level to ensure that the voice of the disadvantaged student is heard.

 In November 2008, Deltha completed the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs Emerging Leaders Institute, which is designed to develop, prepare, and advance leaders within the TRiO community. Each state from the five state region sends two TRiO professionals to the institute each year.

 Deltha, an Evening Shade native, has been with Ozarka College since 2003. She has worked as an adjunct instructor, academic advisor, and program director. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Lyon College at Batesville, a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, a Specialist in Community College Teaching from Arkansas State University, and is currently nearing completion of her Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University.

 AASAP is a private, non-profit organization serving students and professionals within the TRiO programs and other student assistance programs.
