Griffin to Play Key Role in Finalizing National Defense Bill

Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement after being named as a Member of the National Defense Authorization Act (H.R.1540 – NDAA) Conference Committee:

“I am honored to serve as a Conferee to this year’s NDAA Conference Committee.  We are meeting today to begin resolving the differences between the Senate and House versions of the Defense bill.  It is important that we send this legislation to the President before the end of the year to guarantee that our servicemembers have the resources they need to defend our nation.  During these discussions, I also plan to emphasize the importance of the Department of Defense’s effort to reform its accounting system to ensure taxpayer dollars are not wasted.”

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (CA-25) emphasized the important role Griffin will play in the Conference Committee:

“Congressman Griffin has been a productive member of the Armed Services Committee.  For forty-nine years, Congress has passed the defense bill, and I am honored to have Tim Griffin at my side as we close out the fiftieth NDAA.  Over the next few days, the House and Senate will have to work through several important issues.  I know Congressman Griffin will offer valuable insight as we put together the best possible legislation for our men and women in uniform.”

The NDAA authorizes funding for FY2012 for the Department of Defense and related agencies, including all military branches.  The House passed its version of the NDAA on May 26, and the Senate passed its version this past Thursday.  Since there are differences in the language of the two versions, a Conference Committee comprised of members from each Chamber has been established to resolve those distinctions.

Griffin authored three provisions that were included in the House version.  Read more about them here.
