Tony Caramia, piano professor at Eastman School of Music, will perform in the Harding University Administration Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. as part of the University’s Classical Lyceum Series. Before the performance, Caramia will hold a workshop for music students and anyone interested in the Reynolds Recital Hall at 3 p.m.
The theme of the performance is “An American Journey,” which will feature piano music that celebrates several aspects of life in America. The first part of the tour is based on a set of pieces commissioned by Meredith Willson in 1942—each with the word ‘American’ in their title—and continues to explore additional American pieces, through the styles and sounds of such composers as John Alden Carpenter, Roy Harris, Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke and Morton Gould. The second part is a jazz-inspired tour of four cities across the U.S., from St. Louis to Chicago, New Orleans and Manhattan.
Caramia’s piano career has taken him across the country and throughout the world as well. He has written for several musical magazines and has served as a judge for the American Jazz Piano Competition, Crescendo Music Awards and the Young Texas Artists Competition. Additionally, Caramia has performed in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In 2010, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award from SUNY Fredonia.
