Each summer, high school students are invited to participate in Harding University’s Honor Choir, a program featuring classes to enhance a young performer’s vocal skills while providing them with one hour of college credit.
This year’s program runs July 14-19 with a free concert Friday, July 19, at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Recital Hall under the direction of Dr. Cliff Ganus, professor of music and director of choral activities at the University. Forty-one students are enrolled in the program representing 13 different states.
Concert selections include “Sure on this Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen, “Honor! Honor!” by Hall Johnson, “Pilgrims’ Hymn” by Stephen Paulus, “There is no rose of such virtue” by Robert H. Young, “Walk Together, Children” by Moses Hogan, and “Betelehemu” by Via Olatunji and Wendell Whalum.
In addition, the group will perform a choreographed medley of the musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” Jenna Thomas will direct choreography for the concert.
Classes include a range of topics such as choral literature, sightsinging, special music studies, voice, drama, improvisation and song poetry. The classes are led by numerous faculty members and guests including Associate Professor of Music Cindy Carrell; Instructor of Voice Laura Eads; Instructor of Music Lis Jones; Assistant Professor of Music Wes Parker; Professor of Music Arthur Shearin; Instructor of Music Susan Shirel; and Chair of the Department of Communication Jack Shock. Harding alumni Ian and Jenna Thomas will also teach classes.
Camp counselors are Harding students Austin Collum, Kristianna Lynxwiler and Shelby O’Bryan.
