Harding University Names New Department Chairs

Harding University Provost Larry Long announced two departmental appointments today (April 30). Daniel Adams, professor of art, was named chair of the department of art and design, and Dr. Jim Miller, assistant professor of communication, will become chair of the department of communication. Both appointments are effective June 1.

Adams replaces Dr. John Keller, who will be returning to the classroom full time. Keller has served as department chair since 1999 and has been on the department faculty since 1979. Adams has been at Harding since 1991 and was promoted to the rank of professor in 2006. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Stephen F. Austin State University.

“I am confident that Daniel will continue his excellent record of leadership and commitment to Harding’s mission while serving as chair,” Long said. “He has impressed me with his intellectual curiosity, his willingness to contribute to campus committees and activities, and his spiritual example.”

Miller replaces Dr. Jack Shock, who is stepping down also to return to the classroom full time. Shock has been teaching for Harding since 1985.

Miller has been a member of the University faculty since 2004 and received his Ph.D. from University of Tennessee in 2008. He first joined the Harding staff in 1997 after graduating with a bachelor’s in Bible and religion. In addition to having served as advisor for student publications, Miller has also directed both the mass communication program and Honors Media and Culture summer program.

“Jim is an excellent teacher and leader whose skills and energy will be great assets for the communication programs,” Long said. “I have great confidence in Jim’s commitment to excellence in the classroom and in programs provided by the department.”

Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas with 6,295 students. The University also maintains campuses in Australia, Chile, England, France, Greece, Italy and Zambia. For more information visit www.harding.edu.
