Kristen Lewis Scholarship Competition Set for March 28th-29th

The Kristin Lewis Foundation Scholarship Competition will be held at the University of Central Arkansas Snow Fine Arts Center Recital Hall on March 28-29.

Lewis, the international opera star and UCA alumna, established the scholarship in 2014 for emerging Arkansas vocalists. Lewis’ foundation is intended to encourage talent and potential in young singers at the beginning of their professional careers.

Twelve selected applicants will perform a live audition in front of three guest judges for the second phase of the competition on Saturday, March 28. Feedback sessions with the judges and Lewis are also scheduled throughout the weekend.

The Finals Concert and Scholarship Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 29 at 3 p.m.

All events are free and open to the public. The Scholarship Competition is funded by the Kristin Lewis Foundation and the UCA Foundation.

Three singers from UCA — Sarah Cain, a graduate vocal performance major from Jonesboro; Veena Akama-Makia, a junior performance major from Little Rock; and Hayley Coughlin, a graduate vocal performance major from Vilonia — are among the competitors.

Others include singers from the University of Arkansas, the University of Memphis, State University of New York at Purchase, Oklahoma State, Ouachita Baptist University, Harding University and Henderson State.

“All of the singers competing are very talented, so they all should represent themselves and their university well,” said Dr. Martha Antolik, professor of music at UCA. “Scholarship funds awarded from the foundation help singers pay for summer programs, lessons and also coaching.”
