Description: “Making Hats for Movies” is the upcoming program at Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville. Kay and Bob Burton will present their hat making work at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27.

They recently presented to the museum one of their hand-crafted top hats as a gift. It can be seen in the museum’s newest exhibit, “Looking Back: How Toys, Tools, and Togs Have Changed.”

The Burtons are known locally as the co-pastors of First United Methodist Church in Batesville, but they also pursue hat making part time. They are owners of a company known as Clearwater Hats. Their attention to historical and detailed accuracy in making hats for particular time periods has paid off.

Their hats have appeared in several films, including “Cold Mountain,” “National Treasure,” “Book of Secrets,” “The Alamo,” “Cowboys and Aliens,” and many hats for “3:10 to Yuma.” They made a hat for Mel Gibson in “The Patriot.” “When you see something you’ve made on a movie screen that is watched by millions, it’s very satisfying,” related Kay Burton.
Normal museum hours are: Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for seniors and $1.00 for children. The museum is located at 380 South 9th street, between Boswell and Vine Streets in Batesville.
