Senator Tom Cotton Statement on the House’s Passage of Legislation Blocking Heavy Water Purchases from Iran

Washington, D.C.— Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a bill blocking the United States from making heavy water purchases from Iran:
“In May, Senate Democrats obstructed my effort to block the Obama Administration from using U.S. tax dollars to subsidize Iran’s nuclear program by buying the ayatollahs’ heavy water.  So I’m pleased the House of Representatives today came together in a bipartisan fashion to pass similar legislation.  The Obama Administration insists that its recent purchase of heavy water from Iran will be a one-time deal, but the vehemence with which the White House opposed my effort to halt future heavy water purchases calls into question whether the president is being straight with the American people. We’ve given the terror-sponsoring Iranian regime enough concessions at the risk of our security; we should not further subsidize its nuclear enrichment activity by making repeated purchases of Iranian heavy water.”
