Summer is here and it’s the perfect time to plan a trip to Mountain View for a week-end or week-long get-away and a craft experience at the Arkansas Craft School. The following classes will be offered through August 23, 2013:
· July 5 & 6: “Beginning Rug Hooking” with Aileen Anderson. Students will work with a kit, completing a small mat while learning the basics of this age-old craft.
· July 8 – 12: “Glass Bead Making” with Beau Anderson. Beginning glass bead-making students can learn the fundamentals, while more experienced glass bead makers can improve their skills or learn new techniques.
· July 13 & 14: “Ceramic Glaze Calculation” with Paul Lewing. Paul, a former NCECA “glaze doctor” will show ceramic and pottery students sure-fire ways for formulating their own glazes.
· July 16 – 19: “Native American-style Baskets Turned on a Lathe” with Jim Adkins. You won’t believe these ‘baskets’ are actually wood turned on a lathe, and then wood-burned and colored.
· July 22 – 26: “Construct Your Own Ukulele” with John Van Orman. Students can learn the fundamentals of instrument construction, as they create their own ukulele.
· August 2 – 4: “Woodturning” with Jimmy Clewes. World-famous wood-turner Jimmy Clewes returns to teach his design techniques and turning methods. Although this class is currently full, you can call to have your name added to the waiting list.
· August 5 – 9: “Rigid Heddle Weaving” with Felicitas Sloves is a great introduction to the art of weaving, or a way of making weaving more portable than with traditional floor-looms.
· August 6 – 10: Boat building class “The Stitch-and-Glue Flat Bottomed Canoe” with John Van Orman rescheduled for this week in August.
· August 16 – 18: “Beginning Bowl Turning” with Gene Sparling. Wood-turning students can focus upon this specific area of turning, while learning Gene’s techniques for bowl making.
· August 23 – 25: “Mohair Saddle Cinches” with Pop Wagner. Find out why horses love mohair saddle cinches, and make a few to take home.
· August 23 – 25: “Carving Spirit Faces” with Denny Maynard. The traditional and ever-popular ‘spirit face’ is a great jumping-off point for learning to carve wood.
