U.S. Catfish Among Safest Seafood

July 2, 2012 – U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish ranks among among the world’s safest seafoods, according to reports from the Sierra Club (Sierra) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).  The EDF ranked U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish ahead of similarly priced fish such as imported tilapia, basa, tra and swai, which were regarded as less safe due to mercury and other contaminants.

Sources of mercury in wild caught fresh water seafood include discharges from coal-fired power plants into lakes, rivers and streams. Salt water fin fish such as tuna, sea bass, blue fish, mackerel and grouper have high concentrations of mercury from natural and man-made sources, Sierra reports.
