Ayn Rand Turns 105: Celebrating the Birth of a Hero

WASHINGTON–February 2 marks the 105th birthday of the late novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand whose writing continues to entertain and inspire readers.

“Ayn Rand put ‘the concept of man as a heroic being’ at the center of her philosophy, and her birthday is the perfect time to reflect on her own heroic actions,” said Yaron Brook, president of the Ayn Rand Center. “Ayn Rand fled the horrors of Soviet Russia and came to the United States seeking freedom and opportunity. She found both, but she also discovered that the most moral country in history was crumbling from within with no philosophical foundation to save itself. Ayn Rand’s philosophy–with its powerful defense of individualism and capitalism–is that foundation.”

In 2009 Ayn Rand’s works sold more than 1,000,000 copies. Although most famous for her two bestselling novels “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead,” Rand’s philosophical contributions have been receiving more attention lately, including her unique defense of reason and new moral code of rational self-interest.

Brook noted, “Let’s celebrate the heroic life of Ayn Rand–and the ideals of reason and individualism she embodied.”
